Poly in the Middle
June 2nd 2006 05:28
The happiest part of any polyamorous relationship is the middle. This is true on a whole ton of different levels. For example, quite literally, the middle of a love-sandwich is a pretty happy place to be. And while the start may be full of doubt and uncertainty- “Can I really love two people at once? Do they like me? Will they be willing to share? Will they hate each other? Will they run off together and leave me?”, and the end… well, it’s probably full of bitterness and hate and angst and jealousy. Like most ends.
But the middle is where you usually find a delicious creamy filling, often associated with donuts and cakes and other sweet things. The middle is balance.
Like any good uni student and blog writer, when I found myself unexpectedly in an unconventional relationship I did a little research. It turns out that there are lots of varieties poly relationships can take. There are stars and Vs and triangles and squares and probably bunnies and rainbows.
I am in a Vee. Specifically I am the point in a Vee. Intriguing. Romancepedia.com defines me as:
Vee Relationship: Visualize the letter 'V.' Notice that the top two points converge at the bottom. This symbol is used to picture two people who related to a third person but not to each other. This could involve a single sex partner who relates to two same sex partners (e.g. a male and two females) or to two opposite sex partners (e.g. a male, female, and a bisexual male).
Kind of cool. I’m all pointy, and the creamy middle centre of attention. But there are problems with V’s, like the fact that the two ‘arms’ can’t really touch. To do so they would break, and look like II. The truth is, trying to bring Taffy and Mr. X together was breaking me in half.
In my perfect world we’d all be interlocking triangles.
