Out in the World
May 15th 2006 12:54
So suitably dressed and feeling just a little risqué we skipped hand in hand out into a dark and scary world. It was time to run the gauntlet again.
By now I was a little more prepared. Two girls together raise a few eyebrows. Two girls dressed up together at night won’t escape catcalls and solicitations. As nice as it would be to walk unmolested down the street, we have to accept that when you dress provocatively you’re going to receive attention, even if some of that will be unwelcome.
So we got our usual gamut of whistles and car honks and sexual propositions. The most memorable is certainly the boy at the bus stop who yelled, “Yeah Baby! STOMP those boots!” Probably because it’s more threatening when a person is centimetres away than when they are being obnoxious from their car.
But we made our way to Oxford St safely enough, and having been bitten once and now twice shy we got our hands stamped well before midnight. Arq has those scary UV stamps, which are pretty and glowing and don’t leave ugly black smudges, but that can’t be good for your skin. Does anyone have an opinion on relative toxicity?

Well, that's the urban legend. I'm sure it has no substance, though...
