Dancing the Night Away

Hey honey… we’re just dancing. Dancing the night away.

Immortal words from Kal Ho Naa Ho, insidiously working its way into my subconscious as one of my favourite Bollywood movies of all time.

Anyway, Taffy and I were having a fantastic time dancing the night away. Flashing lights, pulsing music, lots of sweaty toned bodies grinding away to the beat. Sometimes too many bodies actually.

For a club with straight bouncers and a hefty cover charge Arq is never lacking in patrons. When it got too intense on the dancefloor upstairs (and Taffy was piqued because there were too many people and she couldn’t climb up to dance around the poles) we slipped downstairs to take in our first ever professional drag show.

It was a fascinating experience and very very humbling. Seriously, crazy dance moves and make-up aside, I only wish I had that much stamina in stilettos. There were a number of acts, some rather more successful than others. The go-go boys were energetic and cute, oriental/geisha scene dragged on a little long. Dragged- huh, unwitting pun!

Anyway, by 3 am we were getting a little tired, and I just happened to get an sms from Mr. X. He’d been spending the evening with a female friend and was on his way home. Did we want to meet up?

I've been to some terrible drag shows... that's painful to watch.

That's random, Cibby. I have yet to see one...

Ah, but a good drag show is eerily impressive! Trina, it's all about where you go Um, this was my first live and in full colour, but I'd caught glimpses on TV and at other clubs. They had so much energy!

I'll take your word for it Lia! So where is this drag place, and what's the cover charge? Who would I bring? I'll try and convince my boyfriend...

Someone I knew once said "you know it's true if it's in colour."

At any rate, drag/burlesque/revue will never be the same after live sex shows in Holland. You just keep wondering when they'll be done with all that prancing about and just get it on.

What? Take care of your OWN subconscious.

Trina, drag with boyfriends... let's play Who's More Uncomfortable!?

I think it's a good idea... take him unannounced and see what his reaction is!

Well I did once drag Mr. X and his brother past Stonewall and made them watch the go-go boys in their little gold shorts.
... can't escape the word 'drag'!
There are often shows at Stonewall, but mostly kareoke-type and since the bottom level is extremely crowded it's hard to see.

In my post I was talking about Arq, which is on Flinders St just off Taylor Square. The cover is $10 except after midnight on Saturdays when it mysteriously doubles. If you do bring your boyfriend, you have to come back and tell us his reaction! Umm.. I would bring some very open-minded people. If you ever are serious

Hahaha Cibby - I was thinking the same... I'd record it for the reaction too.

Lia - oh by the way you said "hefty cover charge" I thought it would be like $50-$60. I'd pay $20 just to see Mr Man's reaction. I'm so cruel. Oh but he's the type to watch pole dancers and be amazed at the strength and techniques rather than perve on naked girls (weird huh, I was the one perving) so maybe he'll see past the drag for the dance skills?
