The Stars Align at South

April 19th 2006 10:26
Indeed I’m no stranger to sexual innuendo, and had no objection to the various metaphorical nipples and penises that seemed to be floating around the table and dropping into our conversation. But when they started comparing literal notes I actually blushed furiously and was forced to leave the room. Yes, that thing I do with my tongue. Really, should sexual skills be brought up over dinner?
Actually, I harboured a secret fear that they might find each other more attractive than they did me, and run off together, and leave me all alone… but no, they kept me stuck firmly in the middle.

When we had concluded our dinner (that laksa defied all three of our stomachs and refused to be finished) we went on a leisurely stroll down to South. The idea is that coffee will aid the digestion of obscene quantities of food. I realise this a controversial claim. Is coffee good? Is it the beverage of the Beast? For some conflicting opinions click here and here.

South is your average overpriced Newtown café, with the tantalising exceptions of white leather lounges, discreet lighting and mood music.

The service wasn’t particularly prompt, but we managed to entertain ourselves while waiting for our flat white (Mr. X), mocha (that was me) and mug of hot chocolate (guess who?) by taking random photos, discussing inappropriate topics and reading aloud the star signs from the back of the complimentary newspaper.

It seems it was a good week for exploring new avenues and broadening romantic horizons. Isn’t that convenient?

Actually, does anyone here believe in astrology? Were the Moon and Venus conspiring to bring about a conjunction of Virgo, Libra and Capricorn?

Shakespeare’s favourite bastard Edmund has a lot to say on the subject.

"This is the excellent foppery of the world, that when we are sick in fortune (often the surfeits of our own behavior) we make guilty of our disasters the sun, the moon, and stars: as if we were villains on necessity; fools by heavenly compulsion,; knaves, thieves, and treacherous by spherical predominance; drunkards, liars, and adulterers by an enforced obedience of planetary influence; and all that we are evil in, by a divine thrusting on. An admirable evasion of whore-master man, to lay his goatish disposition on the charge of a star!”

So I'll stick to pleading we were under the influence of Jasmine Tea.

Phuze Cafe- King St, Newtown

March 29th 2006 13:17
Well after the Weird Weekend that Was I was in serious need of some quiet time. Bad day, stress over timetables, stress over potential job, stress over bizarre relationship triangle. So when Mr. X called and said lets get coffee, I was willing to go along.

Phuze is a fairly cute little café nice and close at the bottom end of King St. Mr. X and I had been there before a few months ago.. I vaguely remember ordering nachos that were in the mid-range… nice, but there are nicer for the price. This time he ordered a flat white which I presume was drinkable since it was drunk. I had my customary mocha… mmm, the sweetness of hot chocolate and the buzz of caffeine. It was fine though a little flavourless- too much milk and water, not enough of the good stuff.

We ended up splitting wedges, and such a pleasant surprise. For $5 we got a big soup-bowl-full along with a tea-cup of jumbled sour cream and sweet chilli sauce. Considering the time-delay and lack of congealed grease I’d judge they were freshly cooked, hot and yummy. And delivered by the chef himself wearing the little pouffy hat. We had a moment of pity thinking he was wasting his culinary talents, but soon forgot and ate.

The décor was pleasant but strange, everything squeezed into a long hall-type shape. We sat at the back, right at the end. Poorly lit, but it lent an atmosphere that was dark, quiet, secluded and actually restful. Perfect for late-afternoon laziness
